PGA: RBC Heritage

Cheat Sheet

Rarely does a sporting event with as much hype as the 2019 Masters live up to its billing.  This one, however, blew right passed whatever expectations even the most optimistic of golf fans could have possibly set.  Tiger Woods, yes, that Tiger Woods, dawned his Sunday red and out-dueled some of the best players in the world en route to his 5th green jacket and 15th Major Championship victory. His ball striking, timely scrambling ability, and most importantly his vintage mental game all contributed to the win. Clearly, the turning point in the final round came on the iconic par 3 12th hole. With conditions rather benign for the majority of the week, 12 was predominantly a birdie fest. But on Sunday, things were vastly different. Gusty winds bellowed through the various hollows and swales at Augusta National, but the 12th tee was sheltered from those obvious breezes.  Shots were falling inexplicably short as swirling winds in the tree tops repelled ball after ball into Rae’s Creek.  Tiger watched 3 players before him rinse their tee shots and wisely chose a more penetrating ball flight to the center of the green. He was able to execute the shot, 2-putt for his par, and assert himself atop the leaderboard. Once the Big Cat is in the driver’s seat, you are never catching him. The rest is history. Will he break Jack’s record? Probably not. But one can certainly dream.
Normally this week would be marred by a Masters hangover. But a surprisingly strong field and a difficult golf course to be played in potentially punishing conditions have me really looking forward to the RBC Heritage. Harbour Town Golf Links is a classic Pete Dye track. The premium here is on proper angles, iron play, and short game.  Smallish greens and a forecast for wind mean you better be striking it flush and be able to get the ball up and down when needed.  You’ll hear a lot this week about whether or not you should fade the players who participated in and especially contended in the Masters. I don’t think you can make a blanket statement one way or the other. I prefer a case by case approach. Sure, some guys will be mentally warn down, but other players may be full of confidence and more relaxed.  Should be an interesting week in Hilton Head, SC.
