The Masters Tournament

Cheat Sheet

The Masters… a yearly reminder of hope, of spring, of fresh starts, of competition, of dreams, of magic. It’s as if the course has somehow frozen time and maintained its imaginative and positive lore which so aptly personifies the post depression-America under which era it was initially built. In many ways, by the mid 30s, the country had turned the corner. And as the contending players complete their front nine, and turn their own corners leftward down the 10th fairway, they will attempt to harness the energy from the fabled grounds, freeze time, and lose themselves in focus and imagination. The Masters… nothing like it.
Perhaps the greatest miracle of Augusta National is that the brilliant Bobby Jones envisioned all of these special characteristics the first time he ever set foot on the property in 1931.

"I shall never forget my first visit to the property.  The long lane of magnolias through which we approached was beautiful.  The old manor house with its cupola and walls of masonry two feet thick was enchanting.  But when I walked out on the grass terrace under the big trees behind the house and looked down over the property, the experience was unforgettable.
It seemed that this land had been lying here for years waiting for someone to lay a golf course upon it.  Indeed, it even looked as though it already were a golf course, and I am sure that one standing today where I stood on this first visit, on the terrace overlooking the practice putting green, sees the property almost exactly as I saw it then.
The grass of the fairways and greens is greener, of course, and some of the pines are a bit larger, but the broad expanse of the main body of the property lay at my feet then just as it does now.”
-Bobby Jones

When Jack and Gary Player fire the opening salvos through tomorrow’s morning dew, a new Masters Tournament will begin. A new dawn. We will all get a much needed injection of hope. Time will freeze for four days. Enjoy and appreciate every moment.
