Kentucky Derby: The Perfect Mint Julep

1 Liter Woodford Reserve Kentucky Derby Bourbon
1 Cup Water
1 Cup Sugar
Fresh Mint Sprigs
Crushed Ice


1: Pour 3 oz bourbon into a bowl, set aside
2: Pour 5 oz bourbon into a rocks glass and drink it (seriously, we need to remove 8 total ounces to make room for the simple syrup. We don’t waste good bourbon.
3: Pour remaining bourbon into a large bowl.
4: Pick 40-50 mint leaves and add to the bowl with 3 oz bourbon. Let Sit 15 mins.
5: Dissolve 1 cup sugar into 1 cup water by bringing mixture to a boil. Let cool.
6: Gather up bourbon-soaked mint leaves into a paper towel and ring them out over the same small bowl they were in. This is how we make the mint extract.
7: Pour simply syrup solution into the large bowl of bourbon.
8: Add 4 tablespoons of mint extract into the large bowl.
9: Return contents of the large bowl back into the original Woodford bottle, and allow to chill in the freezer overnight.
10: Enjoy your mint juleps in stainless steel glasses packed with crushed ice, mint garnish, and a straw!
