PGA: WGC Dell Technologies Match Play

Cheat Sheet

Is it a tradition unlike any other yet? You can just about taste Augusta’s famous pimento cheese sandwiches as the Florida swing is finally in the books. By the way, wouldn’t it make more sense for The Players Championship to be the final instead of the penultimate event of this important piece of the schedule? Just a thought. The Masters is undoubtedly right around the corner, but we have some great events to get through first.
Last week at Innisbrook, demanding approach shots, fast and firm conditions, and freshening winds kept both the scores in check and the leaderboard in neutral. Paul Casey followed up his missed cut at The Players with victory at a fiery Valspar Championship. It would have been nice if Sungjae made a few putts coming home, but such is life. Anyway, we’re on to Austin Country Club for the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play.
If your march madness bracket is busted, you can get a fresh start in this week’s golf event. The field of 64 will compete in a bracket style format. There are 16 pods of 4 players each. Each player will play one match vs the other three players in their pod. The best record advances. This will bring the field down to 16 players, and then it becomes single elimination the rest of the way. For this week’s key stats, I’ll be looking at overall form, birdies gained, bogeys avoided, and a personal assessment of the mental side of the game which I believe to be critical to match play.
One thing to make sure of this week, whether your plan on making outright wagers or play on dradtkings, is to handicap the draws as much as the players you like. Finding soft spots in the bracket will give you your best chance to have more players still alive as the tournament plays out.
