PGA: Valspar Championship

Cheat Sheet

As we expected, the scheduling change for The Players allowed for the cream to rise to the top. In a mostly elite leaderboard, and on a topsy-turvy Sunday, Rory was finally able to pay off a brilliant run of form with his first victory of the season.
Unfortunately, The Players is still not and never will be the fifth major. The course is flat out too gimmicky, and, outside of 16 thru 18, lacks truly recognizable holes. Speaking of let-downs, the NBC Broadcast is flat out terrible. Azinger is all over the place spewing random nonsense, and the sheer volume of live shots they show is inferior to rival broadcasts.  Faldo and Nantz will be a welcome sight come Augusta.
Kudos to old man river Jim Furyk for a gritty performance down the stretch at TPC Sawgrass. I’d assume that was his last real chance to win a PGA event, but his peripheral numbers suggest this was no fluke.  And how about Jon Rahm? I basically threw my 40/1 outright ticket in the garbage when he overruled his caddy only to try an impossible shot while tied for the lead on 11.
Off to Palm Harbor for the Valspar Championship as the Florida swing rolls on. Paul Casey, yes, that Paul Casey, is your defending champion. He may have won last year, but the 2018 edition will be remembered more for Tiger’s return to contention. The Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort is a ball-striker’s paradise. You must get it in play, and you had better be precise with your irons as the approach shots are abnormally demanding.  Without further ado, let’s take a closer look at the Valspar Championship.
